Frequently Asked Questions

What is Reiki and how is it performed?

Reiki is a form of alternative therapy commonly referred to as energy healing. It emerged in Japan in the late 1800's and is said to involve the transfer of universal energy from the practitioner's palms to their client. Energy healing targets the energy fields around the body. The practitioner holds their hands lightly on or over the body, while the transfer of energy takes place. During this time, the practitioner's hands may be warm and tingling. Each hand position is held until the practitioner senses that the energy has stopped flowing. Sessions can last between 15 and 90 minutes. Reiki can aid relaxation, assist in the body's natural healing processes, and develop emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being.

What do you feel when receiving Reiki? This is a tricky question, as every treatment and every client’s experience can be different. You can feel a deep sense of relaxation and peace. You could become emotional during the session. Some people fall asleep. Sometimes you can report feeling nothing. That does not mean the Reiki is not working or helping. Some client’s can feel the energy or heat and some cannot. It is important to remember that Reiki always helps and can do no harm.

Do I stay fully dressed in a Reiki session?

The client will sit in a comfortable chair or lie on a table, fully clothed.

Does the Reiki Practitioner’s hands touch me in any way during a session?

The practitioner places their hands lightly on or over specific areas of the head, limbs, and torso using different hand shapes, for between 2 and 5 minutes. The hands can be placed over 20 different areas of the body.

Are there any medical conditions that would keep me from having a Reiki session? Reiki has not been found to have any adverse effects. Because there is nothing about a Reiki session that can interfere with conventional medical care, Reiki has no known contraindications and can be used concurrently with any medical intervention. Reiki will not override the action of medical interventions, but rather support the patient while he or she goes through them, restoring balance in body, mind, and spirit to the degree possible. Patients who feel well even when fighting chronic illness are more likely to complete their medical treatment and be active partners in their health care. All that said, remember that it is up to you to be responsible for your own medical care and seek appropriate help. Do not go to your Reiki practitioner for a diagnosis and do not avoid recommended medical tests or treatment.

Is one Reiki session enough or will I need more? The number of sessions will vary, depending on what a client wishes to accomplish. Some clients prefer to have one session while others have a series of sessions to work on a particular issue.

How do I prepare for a Reiki session? Eat and hydrate a few hours before the session, but avoid caffeine. Dress comfortable. Relax and set your intention of what you would like the session to help you with, ie. pain relief, relaxation. Going into a healing session without a clear purpose is like getting into an Uber and not telling the driver where to go. The driver can drive, but without a clear destination, you are in a scenic drive around town with no destination.

What should I expect after a Reiki session?

No two sessions are ever the same, as the healing energy will work with the individual in exactly the way they need in that moment. Reiki is intelligent in nature and will always support the client to let go of whatever no longer serves them. Drink lots of water and rest.

After any energetic healing you will go through a period of integration and adjustment as you process the shifts and changes that have been activated within you. It is not uncommon to experience physical, emotional or mental changes.

It is normal to experience one, all (or none!) of the below:

Recognition of a change in energetic state. You may feel calmer, more relaxed, free, light, at ease, relief, expansive, more present, more embodied, grounded within body and life.

Senses can be heightened you may feel, see, hear and taste things with more vibrancy & intensity.

Your energy levels may fluctuate in an extreme way, exhaustion or feeling “high”. You may feel called to rest more or spend more time outside in nature.

You may feel more emotional as you clear out old repressed emotions. Sadness, grief, anger can surface and/or burst of bliss & joy. You may be extra teary or be giggly & laugh a lot.

Take note of your dreams. Your subconscious mind will go through an adjustment and your dreams hold the key for that expansion.

You may experience physical releasing symptoms such as a need to go to the toilet more frequently with increased urine or bowel movements. You might feel experience some pain, headache or cold-like symptoms. These physical detox symptoms usually pass quickly.

You may notice itchiness or tingles through the body or have waves of hot or cold energy flow through you.

Usually any of these symptoms last between 1 – 2 days and will ease. Obviously if you are concerned with anything you notice after a session get in contact with your practitioner.

What do I need to do for a Reiki distance healing session?

Distance or Remote Healing is a convenient alternative to in-person healing. Distance healing is preferred by those who are unable to travel due to illness or are living in a different city or country. Preparing for distance healing is easy. Set the appointment time with your practitioner. Have a quiet space set aside where you can relax and not be disturbed. As with the above hydrate prior, then set your intention and relax. If you have any questions after the distance session, feel free to contact me.

Is Reiki safe for pregnant women? In short answer, Yes, Reiki can do no harm. However if you have any concerns, please contact your physician before booking a session.

What is a chakra?

A chakra is an energy center in the body. Different chakras correspond to different parts of the body and have different functions. In Sanskrit, chakra means wheel. The wheels are responsible for transmitting energy through our body. When our chakras are open and well balanced, we feel healthy, fresh and capable. When they are out of balance, that means our physical, mental and emotional health is also out of balance.
